in the last three years, I have tried many different low-tox or non-toxic cleaning products for our home.
I grew up with my mom cleaning houses for her job, and our house was always spotless. I mean we weren’t aloud to have anything on our floor, and our beds were always made as kids and teens. With me being so used to a clean home, and used to the toxic products that I knew would get thing clean, I had a difficult time finding what worked for me.
Here are some options for a lower toxin clean home:
all purpose cleaner: thieves cleaner concentrate is great. I love the warm spice smell that it has, and it last forever! I’ve been on the same bottle for over a year, and I use it multiple times a day. I use this bottle to mix it in.
I have also tried branch basics. It worked well, but is more pricey. I also like a smell to my cleaning products. You could add essential oils.
attitude has an all purpose cleaner that I have used when I just want to buy one bottle for a Low price point.
glass cleaner: right now I am using truly free. It works great compared to windex, and is my favorite one so far. Attitude also has a glass cleaner that worked alright. And branch basics can be mixed into a glass cleaner, but it did not work well for me and left a lot of streaks.
shower/tub cleaner: I am using truly free for this also, and it works great. We have salty hard water, and it takes all of the build up off when I clean the shower once a week.
toilet bowl cleaner: this is a tough one, and I have not found one that takes off the rust stains in our toilet very well. I do use bon ami that works okay. It does work well in sinks and showers for rust spots and build up. I always go back to my moms go to of the works, which is toxic, but I cannot stand the rust stains in my toilet!
floor cleaner: I will also use my thieves for floor cleaner, and it works well and smells great.
dish soap: we use the unscented attitude dish soap. With the big refill package, it lasts months!
laundry detergent: I also love truly free for laundry. It smells so good, and works well too. With a blue collar husband, it has taken a while to find one I like that cleans his work clothes. They also have a stain remover spray and a stain stick.
I hope this list helps to get you started with swapping out home cleaning products! Doing one at a time is easier on your budget.
